If you have been in our Golf Shop recently you may have met Steven Yang a new member of the staff – he is a welcome addition always friendly, enthusiastic and helpful with a smile on his face.

Steven is from China and came to Christchurch in 2016 when he was 23 to attend the IGQ Golf College at Coringa where he studied golf for two years. During this time the course included golf techniques, swing analysis, coaching, club repairs, golf terms, rules in English and this qualified him for the New Zealand PGA’s Gateway One Course. At the conclusion of the course he was offered a job at the College as a coach assistant. He found this a wonderful experience helping translate between the coaches and students, assisting with the use of the flight scope, putting lab and the body track system.
In my years as Men’s Club Captain, Takuma has always been of tremendous assistance to the Men’s Committee with setting up competitions, collecting match fees, collating results etc. – always well organized, so dependable and all done with a smile. He never appears to get rattled even if there are several players lining up at the counter wanting to pay match fees, obtain a bucket of balls for the driving range or purchase some tees, balls or clubs. I decided to find out more about this very popular and helpful staff member and to share it with you.
Born in Christchurch, Rodney started playing golf at the age of 7 and had an outstanding amateur career, representing Canterbury at both the Junior and Senior level, as well as the New Zealand University team, which travelled to Thailand in 2008. As a 16-year-old he set a course record at the Templeton Open of 8 under par off the blue tees. Several years ago, as a radio promotion with Jason Gunn for 92.1FM that involved attempting to have a hole in one on our old No 3 hole, Rodney hit the perfect shot in his 4th try – Jason finally holed out 5½ hours later after hitting hundreds of balls!
Congratulations to Hillary O’Connor, one of our popular staff members who has been accepted into the NZPGA Trainee Professional programme next year.
Jess Reid is a valuable member of our talented Pro Shop team which has gained well deserved national recognition for the contribution that they are making to coaching players of all ages and abilities. Her friendly, vivacious and energetic personality coupled with her passion in teaching and coaching the game is an important component to this success. It is testimony to her coaching ability that she has clients who travel up from Twizel regularly and some who fly all the way down from Tauranga once a month for lessons.
Tom’s interest in golf started when his Step Grandfather had his birthday at the Ascot par 3 course which was part of the QE2 complex prior to the earthquakes. The children had to play mini golf but the adults got to play on the course. Tom wanted to play ‘proper golf’ so he went out the next day and spent all of his pocket money he had saved on a set of golf clubs and started playing at Coringa from the age of 11.

Canterbury U16 Champ right here!

With rounds of 69, 72 Hayden Lam managed to take the title!

Nice to see you starting to string some good golf together!
Not only a hard-working young golfer with loads of talent, but someone who already sees the bigger picture when he took part in The Longest Golf Day Challenge and was the first fundraiser to reach an impressive $1000!

We couldn't be more proud and look forward to seeing more from this young man in the future!
Some of Cooper's recent achievements:
- Shoots 75, 74 at Waitikiri Open to win 1st Gross (div2)
- Shoots 70 (-3) at Templeton to win the U13 boys by 8 shots
- Shoots 67 (-5) at Harewood in a practice round
- Wins the boys U13 division today at the Canterbury Junior Event with a score of 75 (tied best score of the day)
- Wins the Canterbury Boys U13 Order of Merit for 2019/2020 season

Way to go Coops!
Alisia played some unreal golf this past weekend, shooting a new personal best 75 in tough conditions at the Canterbury Golf Junior Event to win the Girls Division. She tied best round of the day!
It’s been another super fun year working with Cooper Moore, and a particularly fun last couple of weeks for him:

- Shoots 70 (-3) at Templeton to win the U13 boys by 8 shots
- Shoots 67 (-5) at Harewood in a practice round
- Wins the boys U13 Division at the Canterbury Junior Event with a score of 75 (tied best score of the day)
- Wins the Canterbury Boys U13 Order of Merit for 2019/2020 season
We look forward to working with this young man over the next few years after his move up from Queenstown. He has great charisma, passion and a fantastic attitude.

Rodney has been working with him for a month now and we have made some fantastic development in all areas of his game.
REAL long term development sure doesn't happen over 1 or 2 lessons ...

Rodney and Hayden definitely know the importance of the “process”... they have been working together for a number of years on a regular basis and have made great progress with his game.

Rodney had a FUN session with Eugene working on tempo change – he managed to increase clubhead speed by 10mph and got up to 35-40yds of extra distance (straight too)! And, he’s still got room for more speed …

Both swings start at same time and now the ball is SENT on its way, before the old swing gets to position 1.

Follow the path to lower scores!

Harry has been working with Rodney on a weekly basis and they have revitalised his golf game and brought the love back into the game. A game we should all love playing!
